Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe
In 1953, Robert Maloubier and Claude Riffaud, combat divers for the French Navy, needed a watch that could survive what their job demanded — legible in zero visibility, accurate under real pressure, simple enough to read at a glance while everything else in the frame was trying to kill them. Blancpain answered with the Fifty Fathoms, and in doing so invented the modern dive watch before anyone had agreed on what the category required.
This Bathyscaphe carries that lineage into ceramic. The 43.6mm case is satin-brushed grey ceramic — scratch-resistant, remarkably light on the wrist, and indifferent to the corrosion that ends steel cases early. The sunburst blue dial shifts with the light the way water does, set against a unidirectional blue ceramic bezel with Liquidmetal hour markers that won't fade, chip, or yellow the way painted lume eventually does. A domed sapphire crystal protects the face; a sapphire caseback shows the movement underneath, both doing their job without asking for credit.
Powering it is Blancpain's in-house Caliber 1315 — automatic winding, silicon balance spring for resistance to magnetic interference, and a five-day power reserve that outlasts a long weekend off the wrist without needing a winder. Water resistance runs to 300 meters, well past recreational diving depth and closer to the world this watch was actually built for. It's fitted to the blue sail-canvas strap, the collection's nod to sailcloth and rigging rather than the expected rubber.
